Kentucky to the World names new interim executive director for Louisville nonprofit

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Aug. 7, 2025) – Kentucky to the World (KTW) today announced that Alice K. Alt will lead the nonprofit as interim executive director. The change in leadership comes after the passing of the late founder and executive director, Shelly Zegart, who had served KTW since 2012. During her tenure, Zegart helped transform the non-profit from an arts and culture organization into a mission-driven initiative, helping to elevate Kentucky's reputation, workforce development and economic potential.

KTW Founder honored in New York Times Obituary

We are honored that The New York Times has recognized the extraordinary life and vision of our founder, Shelly Zegart.

Shelly’s work redefined how the world understands quilts—transforming them into recognized works of art and history. Through initiatives like the Kentucky Quilt Project, the Quilt Index, and her PBS series Why Quilts Matter, she reshaped cultural narratives nationally and globally.

As founder of Kentucky to the World, she carried this same spirit into elevating Kentucky’s storytellers, changemakers, and innovators, proving the power of narrative to shape economic and cultural futures.

We are proud to see Shelly’s legacy honored on such a prominent stage, and we remain committed to advancing the mission she so passionately built.
